Edward Flack
In 2019, Edward Flack’s journey was featured in the Daily Mirror, which described how, after being ejected from sixth form and struggling to find direction with his A-level studies, he was uncertain about his future.
He first became involved with the Digital Skills Project in 2017 while studying at Barking & Dagenham College, and quickly embraced the project’s hands-on approach to learning. Ed excelled when presented with real- world challenges and work experience opportunities.
Balancing his studies with the demands of working full-time in a pub was not easy, but Ed remained committed to his development. During this time, he successfully completed several technology projects and presented at the WorldSkills Competition (Erasmus+) in Prague, where he also attended industry conferences and networking events.
He received offers from four universities but chose instead to pursue a Degree Apprenticeship with Ford, as a Software Engineer. He combined practical industry experience with academic study, graduating with a First- Class Honours degree. In 2024, he started a Master’s degree through Oxford University.
Ed remains actively involved with the Digital Skills Project, both as mentor and judge, supporting the next generation of students. Reflecting on the impact of the project, he believes it provides students with invaluable opportunities to develop professional networks, gain meaningful experience, and strengthen their CVs.
“The project definitely helps when you’re trying to secure that first job in your chosen career. It gives you an edge and helps you stand out from the crowd.”
